Q&A

“I’ve always wanted to know why. Why do we exist? What came before the big bang? What is the mind made of? These types of questions have always sparked curiosity in me for as long as I can remember. I’m extremely fascinated with the world and nature in general.”

Born in Burbank CA, he fell in love with rap battling during his middle school years. In high school, he began to take interest in singing and eventually released his first single on Soundcloud during his senior year.

“Since I was little, I’ve always loved to write. I used to create these booklets full of riddles because of how much I enjoyed puns and wordplay. But my passion for music didn’t really kick off until I watched 8 Mile for the first time in like 6th grade. I was so inspired. I started freestyling, 24/7 —  just saying random words and forming rhymes around them. It became a habit, I’m pretty sure it was super annoying to everyone haha, but by the time I reached my freshman year of high school, I was pretty skilled at it.”

Today, Mic Bin continues to stay true to his roots with a constant blend of singing and rapping — while subsequently remaining extremely versatile with his music.

“I don’t ever want to put myself in a box with my art. Whether it’s rock, pop, hip-hop, r&b, or whatever. Whatever I feel, I create. It’s that simple. I don’t care about what genre I am or how I’m classified as an artist. The only thing that really matters to me is that I’m making music that truly reflects how I feel in my heart.”

Around the age of 10, struggles with mental health began to emerge. In the 7th grade, he was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

“In middle school, I really struggled with my mental health. I can honestly say that those were the worst years of my life. I had these thoughts that wouldn’t go away, I was stuck in a loop from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed, I couldn’t escape it. I felt like I was a prisoner in my own mind. It was so exhausting and debilitating to re-live the same patterns over and over. It wasn’t until I finally got help for myself that I realized how much bigger the world really was.”

During difficult times, he turned towards music as a coping mechanism. Mic Bin credits Eminem, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, XXXTentacion, Russ, and Frank Ocean amongst many others, as being his biggest inspirations in music.

“Each of those artists played such a vital role for me developmentally as a musician, each during a different stage in my life. In many ways, my sound is a reflection of the inspiration they created in me. Obviously there are many more artists that have contributed to my growth, but I’d say those were the main ones that really changed my life and inspired me to use my voice.”
